Constantine I Sol in quadriga from London
« on: April 29, 2022, 09:47:02 AM »
Here’s a rare one...I bid GBP 325.00 but it sold for GBP 366.86

dealer's description--

“An opportunity to acquire a triple rare rated coin of Constantine minted in London late 314 to early 315AD.Add to this that the coin ‘s photograph is featured in the LMCC reference book on page 227 under the reference 8.07.027(2) and was part of Lee Toone’s collection. The coin was also not listed under any of the RIC volumes. As Lee himself says the condition is not great but at least all detail can be seen and is clearly defined.

The obverse shows the emperor facing right with laureate head and cuirassed,( they could possibly be trabeate, the jury is still out) and the legend reads IMP CONSTANTINUS AVG. The reverse reads SOL INVICTO COMITI and instead of the usual SOL design There is an attractive quadriga with SOL standing raising right hand and globe and whip in left. The letters S-P are in the left and right fields and the mintmark MSL is in the exergue.
Listed as LMCC 8.07.027( 2) and two previous owner tags are included.”
