Constantine I VOT XX from Ticinum
« on: March 31, 2022, 09:30:34 AM »

Not in RIC for mintmark, though Ticinum 167 has VOT XX crescent. Perhaps a misunderstanding by an engraver or a new mintmark

Constantine I
A.D. 320-1
20mm   2.8g
CONSTAN-TINVS AVG; Laureate head right.
DN CONSTANTINI MAX AVG surrounding laurel wreath enclosing VOT XX
in ex. ST crescent
RIC VII Ticinum --

That's an interesting coin - seems like it's probably official.

It reminds me of the RIC 167 footnote of a coin in the Copenhagen hoard from the unlisted Ticinum "crescent + star" issue where the star is in exergue vs normally above the "VOT".

I don't suppose you have the Copenhagen hoard report (Bahrfeldt) ? I was just looking for it this morning, hoping to find it online.

It looks like it’s overstruck, see especially the first part of the obverse legend?

the obverse has a bit of double striking; but none on the reverse.

Appreciate it’s always clearer in hand - there seems to be a shadow of the overstruck legend that reads TANT behind the bust, which may mean it’s a flip over double-strike?

it looks more like scratches behind the bust though it could be graffiti; but it is not very clear.

I think six2ten's referring to this TANTIN ...

The obverse legend break is CONSTAN-TINVS, so an unbroken TANT has to come from the reverse die, not the obverse, hence a flipped double strike.

Exactly, thanks!
