Constantine I, head of Sol, Ticinum mint
« on: January 30, 2022, 06:30:14 PM »
I bought this coin months ago, but I can fully enjoy it only today.
I immediately recognized it was from Ticinum mint (Aquileia is also possible), but It appeared immediately evident it needed a good cleaning and could improve a lot.
So, this is my before/after pictures. The restorator did a good job IMHO.

OBVERSE
CONSTANTINVSPFAVG [CONSTANTINVS P F AVG]; bust r., laur., cuir.
REVERSE
SOLIINVICTOCOMITI [SOLI INVICTO COMITI]; bust of Sol r., radiate, draped and cuirassed, seen from rear.

RIC VI TICINUM —
Lech lists some specimens in his pages.

20mm x 2,93 gr

Nice coin after cleaning. Congratulation, Nikko!

it was from Ticinum mint (Aquileia is also possible)

I should look for die links to obverses of marked coins from Ticinum and Aquileia. But it is so boring!

Dear lech, I was 100% sure it was from Ticinum, but after I saw all the coins you listed from Aquileia mint, a few doubts grown up.

I have a SOLIINVICTOCOMITI from Ticinum with a similar portrait but of course non a die match.

Hi Nikko,
Nice coin, and I agree with the Ticinum attribution.

Your Sol bust, having 7 rays to his radiate crown, is quite an outlier among these "Ticinum or Aquileia" ones, and based on this and overall obverse and reverse styles best matches this left facing Ticinum Sol from the ANS collection.

From what I've seen most of these "Ticinum or Aquileia" ones appear to be Ticinum, but the obverse styles can be so close I'd generally not be confident attributing without a die link (I exclude yours because of reverse style similarity). Interestingly there don't appear to be any (at least I havn't seen any) with obverse style same as the non-bust Aquileia Soli or Marti types ... In Bastien's "Folles sans marque .." he was only able to find a single Aquileia die link which was to a regular Marti with an atypical more Ticinum-like style!
