Constantine I, SOLI INVICTO from Nicomedia
« on: August 19, 2021, 03:34:14 PM »
Santa Claus came to my house this morning  :D I got all together 10 coins from recent auctions including this beauty from Nicomedia mint. RIC lists this emission (77c) from officina A, E and S. Lech lists also officina gamma and delta.  Here is the expected but missing officina B to complete the series.

Nice catch!

What else did Santa bring you there (looks like some very nice coins)? Could you show the other sides?

Thanks Ben!
I get a nice series of Sol coins, all different, from Arles, a couple of uncommon Sol from Londinium and a lovely and rare one from Aquileia.  In the end an uncommon GENIO from Heraclea with CONSTANTINO PF INV AVG legend.
Of course it has been a wonderful morning  ;D

Definitely a nice group of coins! That's GENIO must be quite rare - first I've seen for Constantine from that issue.

He was probably a little bit disorientated because of these climate changes when warm winter is also possible. But good for you. Congratulations!

Could you give weight and diameter of both Constantine's coins. I know that GENIO is listed but is very rare and I would like to have it in my archive.

Dear Nikko,

Can I be so impolite to ask you from who you bought the "GENIO from Heraclea with CONSTANTINO PF INV AVG legend"?

I actually bought the exact coin from a Vcoins dealer (Lodge Antiquities), just minutes after appearing on the website...

However, the order got cancelled with a non legitimate reason ("we don't ship to the EU from UK"). I have never had this problem before and this was also not mentioned in their "terms". I even offered to pay extra for shipping if this was the problem. However, the coin was sold just 2 hours after that...

I directly payed for the coin after I order  but never received a refund. Not even after sending multiple e-mails (no telephone number mentioned). However, I was really disappointed in Vcoins as they did not take action, not even responding to emails!

But I am more than happy to see that the coin has found a good home in beautiful collection!

Best,
Adriaan

I hate to hear about things like that happening...I wish I had some influence there.

Adriaan,

Sorry that happened to you - very frustrating I'm sure. Lodge's lack of a telephone number isn't exactly confidence boosting!

If you havn't already done it, you should open a PayPal dispute - they are normally good about refunds where the seller is not responding.

Adrian, I’m so sorry for your bad experience. If I were you I would be very angry.
Hope you got a full refund, it’s the minimum.
I received the coin from UK without any significant inconvenient. I had only to pay customs fees…

Given the interest in this Constantine GENIO IMPERATORIS, I wonder if anyone has ever seen a Constantine RIC VI Heraclea 49a (issue with star in field). RIC lists it only as scarce, but I've not been able to find a picture of one anywhere.

The most common of these Heraclea issues for Constantine seems to be RIC 60b.

Here's mine, 24x23mm 5.9g :

I also think the coin I get could be a 60b with an evanescent star.

Really? The photo looks pretty convincing - I don't see any traces of a star.

The three issues of this type (*, u, *u) share all five officinas for all emperors (Galerius, Licinius, Daia, Constantine), so perhaps reverse dies were shared between them? Maybe you could find a die link to your reverse to confirm the mintmark.

Edit: I just checked my own records, and the closest I can find is this Galerius (RIC 53a) from the ANS. No match, but certainly very close. I've added your coin too for side-by-side comparison.
