Maximinus II with half-length bust?
« on: November 16, 2020, 12:38:59 PM »
Anyone else notice this coin from Roma 76 auction?
https://www.sixbid.com/en/roma-numismatics-ltd/7909/roman-imperial/6475528/maximinus-ii-as-caesar-bi
Aquileia mint, from the last issue struck by Severus II. The description notes it as RIC 88 from Aquileia, but the bust type is clearly not -- RIC 88 is bust type H (like this but facing right):
https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/gert_boersema/25/product/severus_ii_augustus_306307_ae_follis_29mm_1017_gram_aquileia_ad_30607/1368267/Default.aspx
The half-length bust in the auction is bust type J, which is not catalogued for Maximinus II and in fact appears to be only catalogued for one other coin, which would be the same reverse type struck for Constantine.
I've not seen this bust type ever before on a full-size Tetrarchy-era bronze, at least until you get to some of the later AE3 size coins. And also not listed in Lech's "Not in RIC" pages. Anyone ever see other examples of this bust before -- or, in particular, the Constantine version? I went ahead and paid more than I wanted to for it, just because I really wasn't sure how scarce or rare it really is.

I think your new coin is indeed RIC 88; though the bust is longer than other types. There are other examples like this from the East, like RIC VI Antioch 145a (facing left) but a bit rarer in the West. For another example of this bust see RIC VI London 68; which is shown in the plate coins. I think the authors of RIC VI were just inconsistent in some coin descriptions-- calling a bust half length sometimes, like Aquileia 89, or just cuirassed like London 68.

the coin below is Aquileia 98b and is from Vienna; which RIC cites. Ignoring the adjuncts (spears) & positioning of the right arm and looking only at the bust, it is as "half-busty" as your Max II; but RIC merely describes it as cuirassed.

The Constantine coin with the half bust (Aquileia 89) in RIC that you asked about is from the Gerin collection, published by Otto Voetter; but it is not shown in the book.

This type is not unlisted but is really rare (more than many unlisted types). No examples on OCRE (http://numismatics.org/ocre/results?q=VI+Aquileia+88), CNG or Wildwinds. Only one example on sixbid:

https://www.sixbid.com/en/h-d-rauch/557/rmische-kaiserzeit/576938/rmische-kaiserzeit?term=785&orderCol=lot_number&orderDirection=asc&priceFrom&displayMode=large&auctionSessions=&sidebarIsSticky=false

So the price wasn't insanely high.
