Constantius II FEL TEMP phoenix from Lyons
« on: December 12, 2019, 05:55:55 PM »

According to RIC, Lyons 92 has a diademed bust. Bastien, however, notes that the Paris example cited in RIC actually has a laureate bust.

Constantius II
A.D. 348- 350
16mm    2.5g
D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right.
FEL TEMP REPARATIO; radiate phoenix on globe.
In ex. SLG
RIC VIII Lyons 92 corr.; Bastien 100

That is a great example. I love ones that show the transverse marks on the celestial sphere.

BTW, I'm only passingly familiar with Bastien. I do not own that reference work. Is is a separate single catalog? A series like RIC? A collection of articles?

Bastien is a series similar to RIC, but he only deals with the Lyons mint. There are several volumes covering the Constantinian period, starting with Diocletian up to the temporary closure of the mint (A.D. 294- 316) the next volume starts with the reopening of the mint up to the death of Constantine I (A.D. 318- 337) and the volume I referenced above starts after the death of Constantine and covers up to the death of Julian II (A.D. 337- 363).

Bastien is the best reference for the Lyons mint, but I would not call it necessary for most collectors.
