Constantine I MARTI CONSERVATORI from Arles
« on: February 08, 2013, 09:48:54 PM »
This coin was recently listed on E-bay. RIC does not list this type with the K3 bust and this type is also not listed in Ferrando's book on the Arles mint. Lech illustrates an example from officina T. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/notinric/7arl-28.html

This is an amazing coin  :o
Where did it come from?

Lech illustrates a different coin:  Mars advancing r., transverse spear in r. hand, shield on l. arm. TARL in exergue.
In this case, Mars has a trophy on l. arm. It's still unlisted but it should come after RIC VII Arles 26.

By the way, i have a doubt: RIC 25 has a H6 left bust type but there aren't other coins with such bust type from Arles in RIC VII.
There might be a mistake in the description?

I know that P. Ferrando has listed the same coin with K4 right bust: #350 Ferrando II (two coins known, this one and the only one seen by Ferrando in BNF).

Unfortunately, I don't have Ferrando's book but I will ask if left bust is listed in.

Yes, I didn't pay enough attention to the example Lech listed (I thought it was the same reverse as the one I posted).

Arles 29 is also described as a K3 left bust.

I checked and this bust type was not listed. Below are pics of the pages, unfortunately not so great pics!
