Engraver's error: FL IVL CONSTANTINVS NOB C
« on: October 13, 2018, 03:23:21 PM »
A coin of Constantius as Caesar, Heraclea 133, but with an interesting engraver's error, with an extra N added to make it read as if it were Constantine II. There is little doubt it is simply an engraver's error and not an unlisted legend; apart from the incongruity of FL IVL for Constantine II, Heraclea at this time consistently had Constantine II with a B5 bust (cuirassed), and Constantius with a B4 bust (draped and cuirassed) i.e. as this coin. Weight is 2.93g, diameter approximatey 17 mm

The Heraclea mint definitely had some quality control issues. Below is a coin I have posted before, a Constans with the IVN (junior) legend.

Constans
A.D. 333- 336
CONSTANS IVN NOB C; laureate, cuirassed and draped bust.
GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS; Two soldiers helmeted, stg. facing one another, reversed spear in outer hands, inner hands on shields resting on the ground; between them two standards.
in ex. SMHA✶
RIC VII Heraclea 139

Thanks Victor, I've not seen that error before, that's a great one. I'm actually surprised there are not more errors given how many dies they must have had to cut and the similarity in the names!
