Constantine II VIRTVS EXERCIT from Siscia
« on: August 23, 2018, 01:40:39 PM »
this coin is not in RIC. Lech already has it listed here- http://www.notinric.lechstepniewski.info/7sis-139_con2_b4l.html

it is the FORVM example, currently for sale on eBay.

below is the seller's description- maybe a bit of hyperbole calling this a "grail" coin.

"Up for auction is the Holy Grail of Constantine II with an excellent Portrait, though off center slightly on both sides.

Constantine II
22 May - Mar/Apr 340 AD
Billon Centenionalis, Siscia Mint
2.77g, 19mm, Extremely Rare

Obv. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C, Laureate and cuirassed bust left

Rev. VIRTVS EXERCIT, Vexillum inscribed VOT / XX in two lines, two seated barbarian captives back-to-back flanking base, Christogram (Chi Rho) left, ESIS star in exergue

Ref. Extremely Rare, Apparently Unpublished, RIC VII 116-117 (for obv type) and 138-139 (for reverse type, issues of the Licinii).

This coin may be the only example of this type, so far. This reverse was used for the Very Rare (both R5) issues of Licinius I and Licinius II Caesar. CNG e-auction 368, lot 496, is Constantine II with the same reverse, also 5th Officina but with Constantine II on the obverse left holding Victory on globe and mappa.

Ex. Scott Collection

This coin can be found on Wildwinds.com and its the exact coin."
