Crispus from Trier with decorated shield & cuirass
« on: January 20, 2013, 11:09:54 AM »
I don't have this one in hand yet, but figured I would go ahead and post a picture. It would be a pretty common coin, except for the shield, which has a horseman leaping over a fallen enemy and the cuirass, which looks like it has a Gorgon on it. I will post a better picture when I receive the coin.

There are conflicting accounts, but according to the Iliad (which is not completely clear either), the Aegis, which was made by Hephaestus with the head of Medusa, is the shield or breastplate of Athena and Zeus. That is why Gorgons appear either on the shield or the cuirass of coins.

I just got this coin and it looks great. On the shield there is another figure about to be speared by the horseman. The cuirass has a gorgon on it, which is a match for number 124 in Alten and Zschucke's book (Die römische Münzserie Beata Tranquillitas in der Prägestätte Trier 321-323) on these coins from Trier.

Another picture because I am experimenting with my new 100mm lens.

Fantastic, I do appreciate a lot these issues for Crispus from Trier. I remember I had already seen this shield ornament. It is a coin from the crispus collection and  it has not been struck with the same obverse die which is a surprise regarding its rarity. But possibly the same engraver.

Yes, they do look like the work of the same engraver.

I think I recognize the background of that picture...it looks like the gbcollection- his nickname is gb29400 on FORVM- yes, I just looked at this coin in his gallery.

You're fully right, its nickname can be gb29400 or Crispus depending of the forum. ;)
