VRBS ROMA from Antioch
« on: September 30, 2017, 11:09:52 AM »
This coin is not in RIC and has ΔE versus Θ for workshop 9. The use of ΔE for workshop 9, instead of Θ, was because some people at the time considered Θ the symbol of death --    Topic on the death workshop

So the other VRBS ROMA’s from Antioch in RIC (#91 & #113) use Θ for the workshop, but they also have SMAN(A) instead of SMANT(A). Sometime around A.D. 330, Antioch strarted using SMAN(A) but RIC does have a few GLORIA EXERCITVS types for Constantine (#85). Unsurprisingly other SMANT(A) mintmarks have subsequently turned up for Constantine II, Constantius II and CONSTANTINOPOLIS & VRB ROMA types. It would be interesting (though unlikely to the point of impossible) if an example turned up for Delmatius, since he was raised to Caesar in 335 and RIC has the end date of this mark as 333. Bruun thinks the mint was closed from 333- 335.
