Constantine I VLPP from Siscia with H6 bust...buckler of the day
« on: February 24, 2020, 02:48:46 PM »
Here is a very rare bust type for Constantine from the Siscia VLPP issue. I have seen less of this type than I have of the VLPP with a Chi-Rho on the helmet— of course, this bust type is not as desirable, but I was pretty excited to see it. This is my second example in 12 years and, it is in much better condition than the other. This will definitely be one of my favorite coins of the year and since the year is very new still, I am off to a great start.

RIC does not list bust type H6 for any of the VLPP’s; but, with the obverse legend, it should come after Siscia 53

the last picture is my first example; which I sold over 10 years ago and always regretted it a bit. They look like obverse die matches...given the rarity it is not surprising.

Constantine I
A.D. 318-19
19mm    2.9g
IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG; laureate helmet and cuirassed bust right with spear across right shoulder and shield/ buckler on left.
VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP; two Victories stg., facing one another, together holding shield inscribed VOT PR on altar.
in ex. ΓSIS
RIC VII Siscia --

This one is from a different and unlisted issue. It looks to have no shield or a very little one.
Only the coins on Lech’s page.

thanks for posting...it sure is hard to distinguish a shield, but it should be there, I think the engraver just didn't do a great job-- the area is rounded though just like the above examples. What is really missing is a discernible hand holding the shield.

I am pretty sure that this is the same type. Slightly different but only stylistically. Is it your coin, Nikko? I would be grateful for all data etc. And for any suggestions about officina letter.
