Julian II FEL TEMP horseman from Constantinople
« on: March 04, 2017, 12:25:54 PM »
For those not familiar with the FEL TEMP fallen horseman types, they can be confusing. This is due in large part to the way RIC VIII attempts to catalogue them. I believe it is important to note details about coins; but certainly don't believe that these different details warrant separate RIC numbers. For FEL TEMPS, though,if you want to use RIC, you have to wade through the minutiae. For this discussion I will limit myself to just the horseman. RIC states that there are three, perhaps four, basic postures (pg 38) which are basically -

1. sitting besides the fallen horse
2. lying on horse clutching its neck.
3. lying on horse and extending an arm towards attacker.

There are also examples where the horseman is kneeling.

There are also many different depictions of the horseman like a. bare-headed and beardless b. bare-headed and bearded c. wearing phrygian cap and beardless...and more.

Below is a Julian II coin. It has an unlisted workshop.. because of the horseman. It has an FH3 hosreman, which means he is extending his arm. If he was falling forward or clutching his horse (FH4) the coin would be RIC 143, with a listed workshop.
