Constans GLORIA EXERCITVS from Lyons with Chi-Rho
« on: October 24, 2012, 05:27:21 PM »
Constans
A.D. 335
FL IVL CONSTANS NOB C, bust laureate, draped and cuirassed, seen from behind.
GLORIA EXERCITVS [The glory of the army] Two soldiers helmeted, stg. facing one another, reversed spear in outer hands, inner hands on shields resting on the ground; between them one standard inscribed with a Chi-Rho.
In exergue PLG

This coin is not in RIC, but this period from Lyons does not seem to be well recorded as all the GLORIA EXERCITVS are at least rare. It is also not listed in Bastien's Le Monnayage de L'Atelier de Lyon: De La Reouverture de L'Atelier en 318 a la Mort de Constantin (318- 337). This coin should be listed after RIC 271. There are not any coins attested for Constans in this series, but the next (RIC 278) lists one example with the same bust (B3).

RIC VII also does not list any of the GE types from Lyons with a Chi-Rho.

RIC VIII Lyons 11 is this same reverse with Constans as Augustus (CONSTANS PF AVG), so this coin as Caesar is likely a transitional coin and should possibly be given a later date than that of A.D. 335, which is the date assigned this series in RIC VII.
