Fake coins sold near Ephesus
« on: November 24, 2016, 12:09:06 PM »
I recently read Ursula Kampmann's story Springtime in Turkey 2013 posted on CoinsWeekly.  It is in several parts.  Here is her photo from part 7 of a tourist shop near Ephesus selling fake ancient coins.  Most look too big to be LRBs, but still a good sign of caution about buying ancient coins when traveling.  Mark

I lived in Saudi Arabia for a while and many of the coin sold by vendors in the markets were fake. Most of the coins were authentic, but there were a lot of fakes mixed in. However, most of the fakes were very crude casts and would not have fooled anyone with minimal knowledge.
